(COLUMBIA, SC.) – Today, South Carolina Speaker of the House Murrell Smith, House Education and Public Works Chairwoman Shannon Erickson, and House leadership announced a proposal to expand education freedom to all students and families in the state with H. 5164, which creates a universal expansion of the education savings account (ESA) program.
Americans overwhelmingly support having a say on how and where their child is educated. A recent poll found that nearly two-thirds of Americans — by a more than 3-to-1 margin — support ESAs, with only 19% opposed. Over half of those surveyed (55%), including 63% of parents, said that public education would be improved if access to ESAs were expanded.
“House leadership is committed to empowering every family and student in South Carolina with the opportunity to pursue an education that works for them,” said Andrew Yates, government affairs director, yes. every kid. “This proposal will bring universal education freedom to the Palmetto State, empowering families to customize their children’s education. Every child, regardless of their family’s income or home address, deserves access to an individualized educational experience. Education has the power to change lives, and we applaud House leadership for recognizing this with their historic proposal.”
