Yesterday, the Wyoming House of Representatives passed HB 199, which would expand education savings accounts (ESAs) to every kid, by a vote of 39-21. The bill now heads to the Senate.

Why it matters:

If enacted, every family in the Cowboy State would be empowered to craft an education to suit their child’s unique needs through the Wyoming Freedom Scholarship Program.

What we’re saying:

“We applaud the Wyoming House for moving quickly this session to empower students and families,” said Alice Kerce, government affairs director, yes. every kid. “Representatives have shown that they will put families first in education. We commend the bill sponsor and House Education Chair, Rep. Ocean Andrew, and Speaker Chip Neiman for their invaluable leadership and look forward to working with the Senate to pass it as well.”

Background on HB 199:

  • Expands eligibility from students living in households at or below 150% of the federal poverty level to any student eligible for public school that has not graduated high school
  • Increases the scholarship amount from $6,000 to $7,000
  • Increases the appropriation for the program from $20 million to $30 million
  • Renames the program from Wyoming Education Savings Accounts to the Wyoming Freedom Scholarship Program
