Gov. Laura Kelly today vetoed legislation that would have allowed Kansas to opt into the federal education freedom tax credit, blocking families from accessing a new and growing education opportunity.

Why this matters:
This veto puts Kansas families at a disadvantage, preventing the state from participating in a federal program designed to expand education options at no cost to state taxpayers. Kansas taxpayers can still claim the federal tax credit but if the state fails to opt-in, those dollars will support students in any other state that has opted-in.

The big picture:

  • The bill did not change or reduce any current Kansas education funding.
  • It ensures Kansas could participate in a new federal opportunity.
  • Other states are already moving forward, Kansas is now at risk of falling behind.

What we’re saying:
“It’s deeply disappointing to see a missed opportunity for Kansas families, and we strongly encourage the legislature to act quickly to override this veto,” said Shannon Pahls, Public Affairs Director for yes. every kid. “This bill was about keeping options open, expanding opportunity, and ensuring Kansas tax dollars support Kansas students.”

Call to action:
Lawmakers should act immediately to override this veto and ensure Kansas families are not locked out of new education opportunities.

Bottom line:
Kansas families deserve access to every available pathway, and the legislature still has the opportunity to make that a reality.
