Nebraska has become the first state in the nation to take formal steps toward participating in the new federal tax credit scholarship program to empower families with funds to find their kids’ best-fit education.
Following Gov. Jim Pillen’s recent executive order, state agencies will ensure Nebraska families are ready to benefit as soon as the program begins in 2027.
This is a step in the right direction. By opting into the federal program, Gov. Pillen is paving the way for the first time to empower Nebraska families with funding assistance for their kids’ education.
Why it matters
“Every Nebraska child should have the opportunity to access the education that works best for them regardless of ZIP code or financial limitations,” Gov. Pillen declared in the executive order.
For too long, a family’s income or address has determined a child’s opportunities. Nebraska’s decision helps change that by giving more families flexibility to make choices that work for their kids.
“We commend Gov. Pillen for empowering Nebraska families with funds to choose their education,” said Craig Hulse, executive director at yes. every kid. “This is a meaningful step toward education freedom for Nebraska kids.”
How it works
- Families will begin benefiting on January 1, 2027.
- Taxpayers may contribute up to $1,700 to scholarship organizations.
- Every dollar contributed is matched with a dollar-for-dollar credit, expanding resources for students.
Nebraska in the national story
Education freedom is advancing nationwide. From ESAs to tax credits, states are pursuing different approaches to give families more control. Nebraska’s leadership on the ECCA underscores that this movement continues to build—but there is still more work to do to ensure that every child has access to the education that fits them best.
The bottom line
Nebraska’s action helps more kids access an education that works for them. It’s a welcome step forward—and part of a larger movement toward a future where every kid has the freedom to learn in the environment that meets their needs.
