South Carolina’s budget for the coming year is signed, and with it comes full funding for the Education Scholarship Trust Fund at 15,000 students.

Governor Henry McMaster announced the news, saying:

“This budget once again provides funds for the Education Scholarship Trust Fund. These funds will allow parents of up to 15,000 students to choose the type of educational environment and instruction that best suits their child’s unique needs.”

For those 15,000 families, that’s the difference between keeping their kid in the school that’s working and losing that option. It’s worth putting that number next to another one: 32,240 families applied for those spots this year, up from 16,140 applicants for 10,000 spots the year before.

Champions Who Got This Done

These legislators understand that families should be empowered to choose the education that fits their child.

We’re grateful to Education Chair Shannon Erickson and House Budget Committee Chairman Bruce Bannister, along with Jackie “Coach” Hayes and Davey Hiott, for their work in the House. In the Senate, Finance Chairman Harvey Peeler, Tom Davis, and Brad Hutto did the same. Their efforts, on both sides of the aisle, kept this funding in the final budget.

15,000 families is real progress. Now let’s fund more.
