Education freedom has been a central issue in many governors’ State of the State addresses this year. From expanding education freedom programs to passing open enrollment, governors made clear that empowering families and students is a growing priority nationwide. 

As we look ahead to 2026, a clear theme is emerging: states are listening to families, putting students first, and expanding opportunity so every child can access an education that fits their unique needs. Here are just a few highlights that show how education freedom continues to gain momentum nationwide.  

Indiana’s Choice Scholarship Program is now universal, empowering every Hoosier family—regardless of income or ZIP code—with education options that work best for their children. By placing decision-making power directly in parents’ hands, Indiana is reinforcing the idea that families, not systems, should be in charge of education.  
West Virginia continues to stand out as a national leader in education choice through its HOPE Scholarship program. In his State of the State address, Gov. Patrick Morrisey reaffirmed the state’s commitment to supporting and sustaining this transformative program. 

The HOPE Scholarship gives families the freedom to choose educational pathways that align with their children’s needs. Continued support from state leadership ensures that education choice remains accessible to families across West Virginia. 
Florida’s leadership in the education freedom movement was front and center during Gov. Ron DeSantis’ State of the State address. He highlighted the state’s progress over the past seven years, noting policies that have expanded choice and empowered families across the state.

Florida’s sustained commitment demonstrates what’s possible when states prioritize student-centered education. Families across the Sunshine State now have more options and greater confidence that their children’s educational needs can be met. 
In Alabama, Gov. Kay Ivey announced her intent to increase funding for the CHOOSE Act. Additional funding means more students will have access to learning environments that meet their individual needs. Gov. Ivey’s continued support underscores Alabama’s growing commitment to education freedom and opportunity. 
In her final Condition of the State address, Gov. Kim Reynolds reflected on her legacy as a steadfast champion of education freedom in Iowa. Under her leadership, the state has taken significant steps to expand choice and empower families. 

Her remarks served as both a reflection on progress made and a reminder of the lasting impact strong leadership can have on students and families. Iowa’s education freedom efforts will continue to shape opportunities for years to come. 
Gov. Mike Kehoe used his State of the State address to call on legislative leaders to pass open enrollment in Missouri. Open enrollment would allow Missouri students to find the public school that best fits their academic and personal needs, no matter their home address or income.  

Looking Ahead 

The momentum behind education freedom is undeniable. Across the country, governors are responding to families who want more say in their children’s education and more options to help them succeed. 

There is already so much to celebrate this year, and the outlook for 2026 is bright. As these policies continue to take root, students nationwide will benefit from greater opportunity, flexibility, and pathways to success. We’re excited to see how education freedom continues to grow—and how students across the country thrive as a result.
